Empowering Families Together
My name is Libby and I have been a Qualified Teacher specialising in Special Needs for over 30 years. My personal experience with close family requiring special needs support has driven me to dedicate my career to supporting individuals with special needs. This deeply personal experience fuels my passion and commitment to making a lasting impact in the lives of those who need it most.
Over the years, my career has led me to specialise in children with SEND. I have supported hundreds of children with a variety of Additional Needs and their families. I have been an Inclusion Lead at two Primary schools, working directly with all the staff supporting children with a variety of Additional Needs, leading training, observing children, writing and implementing individual targets, liaising with outside agencies, and ensuring all children are fully included in all of their learning. I also taught the younger children in the Specialist Speech and Language centre and ensured they all felt safe, valued and understood my expectations and boundaries, before implementing any learning, which was adapted to their individual learning styles and interests.
I have also been a teacher in charge of an ASD and Speech and Language class in a local Nursery School, supporting children and their parents on the first steps of their lives in Education. I worked closely with the parents and professionals to ensure the children had a firm foundation for their future learning. They all received an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) ready for Primary school, whether it was a specialist setting or a Mainstream school.
My inspiration and passion for working and supporting children with Additional Needs derives from growing up closely with my sister, who was diagnosed with Autism when she was in her early 40’s. I watched her struggles and achievements and understood at a very early age how to help her access the world around her, by adapting my behaviour and use of language.
I also understand the experiences of parents firsthand, as my eldest son has additional needs. I have worked tirelessly to ensure that he had the support he needed throughout school and university, and I am immensely proud of the adult he has become.
As a SEND consultant I will be using all of my skills, knowledge and understanding, to continue supporting children with Additional Needs and the parents supporting them. During my later years, I have realised that the specialist help required by parents is very difficult to find, with many parents not having the right channels using lawyers. Lawyers will fight for you and your children’s rights but will not have the skills to understand and support you and your children. This, and my personal experience, has inspired me to deliver this much needed service.
